Val Young aka “Lady V” of the Mary Jane Girls made a stop in Atlanta to perform at Wolf Creek Amphitheater for the Wolf Creek Funk Fest concert. The concert lineup also consisted of Sheila E, Confunkshun, and Lakeside.
Vocalist Val Young was formerly in George Clinton‘s Brides of Funkenstein and also did background vocals for the Gap Band and Roy Ayers. She became a solo vocalist after meeting Rick James, and James got her signed to Motown. They worked together on the LP Seduction in 1985. It got Young one Top 20 and one Top 30 R&B single.
Young, spoke exclusively to Tall Boy about how she partnered with the late great Rick James, who she would like to work with, what she thinks of the music being created today and much more.
