The date of December 9, 2018 will always be remembered as the day New Birth Baptist Church in Atlanta heard words of faith, inspiration and guidance from Pastor Jamal Bryant. Not to paraphrase, but those words will go down as a day of infamy due to the symbolic nature of the event.
Dr. Jamal Harrison Bryant, the newly appointed pastor of the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, comes from the historic Empowerment Temple AME Church in Baltimore, Maryland, where he had held court since 2008. It’s also historic because up until December 2018, New Birth has been without a permanent leader since the passing of Bishop Eddie Long.
Such an auspicious event was attended by many, including Tommy Dortch, Commissioner Mereda Johnson and Congressman Hank Johnson. He was well received for his first sermon and had nothing but praise and hope for his great success.
Tommy Dortch says Pastor Bryant means, “Rebirth of the New Birth.”
Commissioner Mereda Johnson remarked that they are, “Proud to have the pastor here. New Birth is back.”
And Congressman Hank Johnson believes he is a, “Man of great faith and great action.”
But when asked, Pastor Bryant says about his sermon, “You can survive a shipwreck. It’s just the beginning, we’ve just scratched the surface.”
New Birth will continue to give the quality and consistency to their members, new and old, that has always been their purpose.
