David A. Thomas Reacts to Recent Million-Dollar Morehouse Gift From Robert Smith

David A. Thomas talks about speech heard around the world & gentrification in his community of Morehouse

Morehouse President Dr. David A. Thomas recently was spotted at the Hope Global Forum and was asked about the recent event that highlighted the 2019 graduation over at the institution. For those who haven’t heard by now, private equity investor and billionaire Robert F. Smith gave the commencement speech at Morehouse College., The highlight of that speech was he announced to the graduating students his “gift” was to pay off all of their student loans. This became “the speech heard around the world.”

Dr.  Thomas @ProfThomas, president as of 2017, is Morehouse University’s 12th president, therefor he’s an important figure of African-American excellence in the Atlanta community, if not the nation. So he expressed amazement because he didn’t know Mr. Smith was going to make the announcement. Further he felt joy for his students who would benefit from this gift, and lastly gratitude. To him, it is a gift for liberation.

“People don’t understand how great a gift it is to be liberated from debt.”

Regarding the Hope Global Forum, he wanted to express how inspiring, educational, and that it’s targeted to the most important topics that has to do with creating community in the technological community we live in.

It’s important to plan on how the community evolves so there’s not community displacement.  Work is already being done along those lines, and is best in class as led by Westside Future Fund. Not trying to lose some of its cultural character.”

With this kind of foresight, the future looks especially bright in the forecast for Morehouse University.
